32-year-old arrested after double shooting in Sheffield

A 32-year-old man from Sheffield has been arrested following a double shooting in Sheffield during the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police were called to Machon Bank, Nether Edge shortly before 1am following reports of shots being fired. On arrival, officers discovered damage to a window consistent with a firearms discharge.

Further reports were received of shots fired on nearby Glen Road ‘moments later’, police said, and damage to a car also consistent with a firearms discharge was discovered there.

No injuries were reported, but police are treating the incidents as targeted attacks which are linked.

On Friday afternoon (24 July), police confirmed a suspect had been arrested on suspicion of possession of firearms with intent. He remains in custody.

Temporary superintendent Ian Proffitt from South Yorkshire Police said: “I know incidents like this cause great concern to those who live and work in the communities affected. Let me reassure you that my team is working hard to identify those responsible and take them off the streets. Two warrants have been executed this morning in relation to this matter and enquiries are very much ongoing.

“The increased police presence in the area that you have already seen will continue today and into the weekend and I urge anybody who has information that may help our investigation, particularly if you have CCTV or dashcam footage from the timeframe of the incident, to come forward.”

Police were called to another shooting on nearby Abbeydale Road at 1.10am on Friday morning, where they found a dog with injuries caused by shotgun fire. The animal was subsequently put down.

It is not known if this incident is linked to Thursday’s shootings. No arrests have yet been made.

Three shootings also took place in nearby Sharrow and Nether Edge between May 7 and 8.

Superintendent Proffitt added: “I understand you may feel nervous about telling us what you know and I remind you that you can get in touch with the independent charity Crimestoppers completely anonymously."
