Sheffield man in court for “stamping” on ex-girlfriend's head in row over what she was wearing

“You have escaped further imprisonment by the skin of your teeth”

A Sheffield man stamped on his ex-girlfriend’s head because he didn’t like what she was wearing, a court heard.

Ibrar Azeem’s victim lost consciousness during the attack.

Stephanie Hollis, prosecuting, said: “He took offence to what she was wearing and told her - do you think you’re going out dressed like that?”

She told the court his comments about the clothing were “as a result of his Islamic faith”.

Violence flared on July 13, 2026, when the victim returned home at around 5pm to find Azeem, aged 38, of Hamilton Road, Firth Park, had let himself into her house.

Sheffield Crown Court said that after the attack, when the victim regained consciousness, she awoke to find Azeem standing over her.

She felt “scared” and feared he was “going to take her life”, the court heard.

Emergency services were called and the victim was taken to hospital, where she was found to have bruising on her body, chest and knees.

At 2am, police officers called at the defendant's house and found him in a nearby garden after a “foot chase”.

Miss Hollis described him as “aggressive” and having a “violent nature” towards officers, and as they tried to escort him Azeem spat into an officer’s face.

He was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm, and assault of an emergency worker which he denied initially but then later changed his plea to guilty.

The court heard how he was using cocaine around the time of the offence.

Miss Hollis said Azeem’s ex told police at the time that she was “scared of going back to the house” and “scared he would kill her”.

Referring to the police officer, she said: “He doesn’t go to work in order to be assaulted.”

The court heard Azeem was “violent” towards officers and spat at them in another incident in January.

Becky Jane, defending Azeem, said he has a “14-year-old” son who he sees regularly and is also a carer for his mother.

She said: “He has issues with behaviour under the influence of drugs.”

He began taking drugs after the death of his father in 2023, she said.

Miss Jane said he had done “a great deal of reflecting” while in prison awaiting his sentencing hearing.

She said he had missed his sister's wedding during his time behind bars but he does “accept the severity of this offence”.

Miss Jane told the court the woman he attacked now wishes to “continue the relationship with him”.

Addressing Azeem, Recorder Jeremy Richardson said: “You took a dislike to the way she was dressed, which is none of your business.”

But he said he does not deem him to “present a risk of reoffending” and because he had served the equivalent of nine months behind bars on remand, the judge was “ just about persuaded to suspend” his prison sentence but it was “very very borderline”.

He jailed him for 18 months, suspended for 24 months.

Azeem was also handed a 150 hour unpaid work order and a five year restraining order.

The judge said: “You have escaped further imprisonment by the skin of your teeth.”
