Jury sworn in trial of man accused of bomb hoax in Sheffield city centre
The prosecution case will be outlined on Wednesday
A jury of 12 men and women have been sworn in the trial of a man accused of a bomb hoax.
Yaqub Younis, formerly of Broad Street, Sheffield, has been charged in connection with an incident, which lasted around 36 hours and was centred around the Gateway block of flats on Broad Street, off Park Square roundabout.

Mr Younis, aged 49, is accused of communicating false information with intent via a bomb hoax, along with further charges of affray; intentionally/recklessly causing a public nuisance and damaging property.
He entered not guilty pleas to all four charges, a short time after the jury panel were brought into court this afternoon (Monday, June 1, 2026).
The jury of five men and seven women were sworn in shortly before 3pm.
As he thanked them for their public service, The Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, told the jury: “You are the real judges in this case, not me.”
After providing the jury with some brief details concerning the case, and the rules they must abide by, Judge Richardson sent them home for the day.
They are now set to return on Wednesday morning (June 3, 2026), when the prosecution’s case against Mr Younis is expected to be set out.
All of the offences faced by Mr Younis are alleged to have been committed between Sunday, February 9 and Thursday, February 13, 2025.
They relate to an incident which unfolded between Monday, February 10, 2025 and Tuesday, February 11, 2025, in which the Gateway flats were evacuated, and Sheffield Parkway - one of the city’s busiest roads - was closed.
The trial, which is expected to take up to 10 days, continues.
