Exclusive:Nurse and university lecturer from Sheffield placed on sex offenders register for groping vulnerable woman

He was an advanced medical practitioner in A&E department and a university lecturer with a £50,000 salary at the time

A nurse and university lecturer from Sheffield groped a “vulnerable” woman - forcing himself on her while she was on a mix of alcohol and prescription medication.

David Sagol, aged 37, aged was an advanced practitioner at Rotherham Hospital’s A&E department and a lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University with a £50,000 salary at the time of the assault.

He no longer works for the university or hospital.

Sagol denied sexual assault but was found guilty after a trial at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court - a finding which he “still” denied, the same court heard.

Mahee Ali, prosecuting, told how on March 26 last year Sagol was at the same address as his “vulnerable” victim - who had drunk too much while on medication - when he assaulted her.

She said: “The defendant was drunk and became aggressive. He tried to lift her shirt. She asked him to stop but he persisted.

“She was able to get away.

“The defendant offered to sleep on the sofa and she could sleep on the bed. However he tried to kiss and touch her again and the victim left the address.

“The victim was vulnerable and had significant issues.”

Lucy Miller, Sagol’s solicitor, said at the time of the offence the registered nurse was working as an advanced medical practitioner at an A&E department and also lectured at Sheffield Hallam University.

The disgraced nurse’s salary would have been around £50,000 at the time, the court heard.

District Judge Tim Spruce told Sagol: “You have never been in trouble before, so this is fairly out of character. It means you’ve lost your good character and there are consequences which go beyond the criminal justice system.

“It’s a nasty offence and I know you still do not accept the magistrates’ findings.”

Sagol, of Glen View Road, Greenhill, was handed 20 weeks’ jail suspended for 12 months and a probation requirement.

He was placed on the sex offenders register for seven years, ordered to pay £650 costs and a £145 victim surcharge.

Following the case, a spokesperson for Sheffield Hallam University said: “We can confirm that this person is no longer employed by the university and hasn’t been for some time.”

A spokesperson for The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust said: “We take any reported incidents of sexual misconduct extremely seriously and expect every employee to uphold the highest standards of professional and personal conduct.

“This individual no longer works for the Trust."
