“This was a lady you were supposed to love, protect and care for, not abuse and injure”

The pair’s 30-year relationship had been marked by heavy drinker Morgan’s “violence towards her”

A 72-year-old man who elbowed his partner “multiple times” to the face, breaking her nose - then blamed the “menopause” for his latest attack on her, a court heard.

Martin Morgan’s other half of 30 years also suffered “severe bruises” to her lips, eyes, cheek and collarbone during the January 12 beating at their Rotherham home.

Prosecutor Matthew Moore-Taylor said the pair’s relationship had been “marked” by “heavy drinker” Morgan’s “violence towards her”.

In June 2023 Morgan broke her clavicle stamping on her shoulder but she later withdrew her support for a prosecution.

“That’s the theme of a number of allegations made by the complainant over the years,” said Mr Moore-Taylor.

He added: “Over the years the defendant has exhibited control over her through money, who she is able to see and where she is able to go.”

After Morgan’s arrest for his last assault against his now ex-partner he denied the offences to police, telling them she turned into the “devil” every 28 days due to the “menopause” and her “PMT” was “dangerous”, said the barrister.

While on bail he also texted the complainant, saying “please stop the proceedings against me, love you X”, offered to buy her a car and transferred £200 into her bank account.

Morgan had four convictions for five offences including affray and wounding in 1976, the court heard.

Judge Megan Rhys told the defendant, already in HMP Doncaster on remand, “this was extremely unpleasant offending”.

She added: “This was a lady you were supposed to love, protect and care for, not abuse and injure.”

However, she told Morgan she was “just persuaded” to suspend 32 month’s jail for two years, as there was no evidence he would not comply with probation to ensure there was “no repetition in future”.

Morgan, formerly of Concord View Road, Kimberworth, was handed 150 hours of unpaid work, 40 rehabilitation activity days and a 10-year restraining order.

He admitted assault with actual bodily harm, grievous bodily harm and witness intimidation.
