North Ridge Community School scooped the cash as part of their prize for winning the Extra Learning category at the awards, which champion the people and activities making Breakfast Clubs across the UK fantastic.

North Ridge - a special school for 119 pupils aged 3-19 with a range of learning difficulties - allows the children to plan their own breakfast and purchase their food, educating the children on budgeting and healthy lifestyle choices. The breakfast club opens prior to school at 9:15am and helps pupils to carry out independent tasks, such as making their own breakfast, in order to build on each individual’s confidence.

Assistant head teacher Sue Plant said: “We’re overjoyed to have won the Extra Learning category at this year’s Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards.

“It shows all the hard work staff put in is worthwhile as the children are really benefitting from the extra learning activities.

“The children’s social skills, self-esteem and confidence have improved significantly since coming to breakfast club and taking part in our day to day activities to prepare them for independence in adulthood.”

Three members of staff and five pupils visited London for the recent award ceremony and enjoyed a tour of the capital’s Houses of Parliament.

Ed Miliband, MP for Doncaster, said: “Congratulations to everyone from the North Ridge Community School on winning the Breakfast Club Award for Extra Learning. It’s fantastic to hear the club provides engaging activities that build children’s confidence, helping them start the day focused and ready to learn.
