The city’s branch of the Campaign for Real Ale, or Camra, has recruited 13 businesses - including a number of breweries - to sponsor a mat each as part of a special collectors’ pack.
Three packs will be sold on eBay in the run-up to this year’s Steel City Beer and Cider Festival, taking place in October.
Collectors - known as ‘tegestologists’ will also be able to pick up a mat at participating Sheffield pubs. Sponsors helped pay for a print run of 90,000, some of which were distributed during Tramlines Festival, with the rest appearing gradually.
All money raised from the eBay auctions will go to Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity.
Sheffield Camra pub heritage officer Dave Pickersgill said: “We started distributing the beermats at Tramlines and found interest was high. Many tegestologists wanted to get a full set and were collecting them at different venues.
“We saw a similar reaction at the recent Camra Great British Beer Festival at Olympia in London when the Sheffield beermats were also widely available.
“We decided to auction three full sets on eBay with proceeds going towards our festival charity, the Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
“We were happily surprised when the first set went to an address in Cheshire for £45.
“The forthcoming 42nd.Annual Steel City Beer Festival will be the biggest yet. We are looking forward to having more than 240 real ales available in one of the most atmospheric UK beer festival venues.”
The participating businesses are Abbeydale Brewery, Acorn Brewery, Bradfield Brewery, Emmanuales, Little Critters Brewing Co, Lost Industry Brewing, Network Taxis, Shakespeare’s, Sheffield Brewery Co, Stancill Brewery, Thornbridge Brewery, Travelmaster and True North Brew Co.
