A Met Office spokesman said there could be 'frequent heavy snow showers through the day' and 'significant snow accumulations in places'.

He added: "It will be bitterly cold as a strong easterly wind develops, which will lead to drifting snow and an increasing wind chill."

The forecast is for frequent heavy snow showers to continue through the night, with the easterly wind continuing to strengthen.

It will be extremely cold with a widespread severe frost as temperatures drop to -8C.

Tomorrow, snow showers are set to continue through the day, leading to significant accumulations in places.

It will be an exceptionally cold day with many places remaining below freezing, and there will be a bitter easterly wind.

The severe weather this week is because of a cold blast of air known as the 'Beast from the East' sweeping in from Russia.
