Yorkshire Water said most of the work would take place under temporary traffic management arrangements, although it has not provided specific road closure dates.

The company said it was working with highways to keep disruption to residents and road users to a minimum.

Yorkshire Water said it was contacting local residents and businesses to keep them informed.

Jason Farrar, project manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “We’re investing £3.6m to replace around 9km of ageing water mains in Wharncliffe Side and Brightholmlee. The area has been identified as a high priority for investment and upgrade because of repeated failures in some locations.

“This significant upgrade of over 9km of clean water mains will help reduce the likelihood of bursts and interruptions to customers’ water supplies in the future and we’re working closely with the highways team to keep disruption to residents and road users to a minimum.”

Contractor M Group will carry out the work.

The scheme forms part of the company’s £8.3bn investment programme across Yorkshire between 2025 and 2030.

This includes £406m to replace more than 1,000km of clean water pipes across the region.
