A ‘purl’ of an idea as older people in Doncaster knit for good causes

Tenants from a Doncaster retirement property have been getting together to knit, natter and support local good causes.

Older people from Anchor’s Lime Tree Court in Hyde Park have spent five months making small blankets for local animal shelters, as well as larger blankets for wheelchair users in the community.

The tenants have also knitted purses and bags for St James’ Church to put in the Christmas Gift Shoebox appeal.

Lime Tree Court manager Terrie Lee said the tenants decided they wanted to use their regular ‘knit and natter’ sessions for a charitable cause.

She said: “The tenants were keen to do something to help good causes in Doncaster, so they have been busy knitting and crocheting for months.

“We have a knit and natter session twice a week, and lots of other clubs, as everyone at Lime Tree Court is very active and sociable.”

Pat Caswell, 72, who has lived at Lime Tree Court for two years, said she enjoys knitting because it brings back happy family memories.

Experienced knitter Joan said: “I’m really pleased we could do this to support the shelters, the church and other local people. I used to knit clothes years ago for my children when they were young, so our knit and natter sessions always remind me of that.”
