Meadowhall has made changes to its traffic light system outside stores to help colour blind shoppers.

As part of Meadowhall’s social distancing measures implemented to help reduce the spread of coronavirus, traffic lights now operate outside stores to let customers know when they can enter.

The aim it to avoid crowds in the shops.

But after being contacted by a member of the public with concerns for colour blind shoppers, Meadowhall bosses changed the traffic light system so that the words ‘red’ and ‘green’ are displayed in addition to the colours.

Meadowhall bosses were told that one in 12 men and one in 200 women are colour blind.

In a tweet to the member of the public who raised the issue, Meadowhall said: “Making sure the centre is accessible and safe for everyone is really important to us, so we have added the word ‘red’ or ‘green’ to all of our indicators to help with identifying their colour.”
