Callum Chambers, aged 30, was reportedly unloading his friend’s boot on Firth Park Road at around 11.30pm on Sunday when a speeding car struck a third vehicle, crushing his legs in between the two. The incident took place outside Callum’s house.

He was rushed to hospital and placed into an induced coma in the early hours of Monday after being given morphine to help with the pain. The father-of-one received surgery on his legs, arm and foot, as well as skin grafts, in a marathon procedure which lasted from 8.30am until 5.30pm on Monday.

Courtney Barnsley, who has a two-year-old son with Callum, Elijah, said: “He’s stable. I’ve spoken to the nurse, he’s had a good night. His chest is clear which they said is very good because it can have problems after surgery.

“After the doctors have done ward rounds they are going to see if they can wake him up.”

Callum, a self-employed courier, may need further surgery as part of his recovery, Courtney said.

She added: “It’s been awful. I’ve had his little two-year-old, he’s used to seeing him every day or on FaceTime. I just can’t wait for him to wake up, we can’t go and see him because of coronavirus.

“Elijah’s been alright, Callum was supposed to be looking after him yesterday and I just said he’s got poorly legs and he can see him soon.”

Callum did not suffer any head injuries and is expected to make a recovery.

Courtney said: “We are very lucky it was his lower legs. He’s got a long way to go but we’re just so grateful it wasn’t more serious than it already was.”

Two cars were racing down the road when one of them crashed and caused Callum’s injuries, she added. Police said a BMW, an Audi Quatro, a Volkswagen Golf and three parked cars were involved in the incident. As yet, nobody has been arrested.

Courtney said: “The road is so busy, there was always people racing on that road and speeding side by side. It’s busy anyway with parked cars.”

Callum’s friends, including his team mates at Nappys XI – the football team he plays for – have begun raising money to help him while he recovers. An online fundraiser has also been launched, with a target of £2,000.

Jordan Ward, who has been involved in the efforts, said: “All we are doing as friends is trying to make it as easy as possible for him to recover.

“He’s going to be out of work for a very long time.”

Courtney added: “It’s just so overwhelming, he’s just such a popular guy and would do anything for anyone. I just can’t believe how many friends he has got, there’s been so many people messaging me to offer support.”
