Of all the dogs in Sheffield waiting for their forever home, the pups at Sheffield City Council's kennels are some of the most deserving.
Whether abandoned by their owners or simply found wandering the streets, these dogs have had a rough time of it as of late and are now looking to put the past behind them. It's hard to fathom why anyone could give them up, but hardships like the cost of living crisis are leading to more and more pets being turned out from their homes in 2023.
They include "lovely" seven-month-old Sol, a male lurcher found as a stray in Sheffield; 10-year-old Patterdale Nip who came by the kennels "through no fault of this own" - and half a dozen Staffordshire Bull Terriers and other dogs found wandering the Steel City with no name or microchip.
Here are just 10 of the pups waiting at Sheffield City Council kennels for someone to give them a second chance, along with the description written for them by staff.
Adopting from the city council requires a £100 adoption fee which includes microchipping. All dogs but be neutered/spayed at an additional cost to the adopter.
For full information or to book an appointment to see the dogs available, call the kennels direct on 01142726758 or 07817 497995, 8am - 8pm seven days a week (closed between 1.30pm and 2pm for lunch). Viewing is by appointment only, subject to a successful pre-adoption questionnaire carried out over the phone. Remember to quote the dog's reference number when calling.

!["Damon was brought into kennels after being found roaming as a stray. He is microchipped so we know he is only 8 months old. Damon is a cane corso, large in size, dark brindle in colour. Damon isn’t coping well in kennels, he has a lot of energy & is becoming very stressed in this environment. In kennels, we have noticed him being reactive towards the other dogs he was kennelled next to. Damon needs all aspects of training including house training & will need a strong confident handler. Damon is very boisterous & jumps up so will need a home without young children. Damon has always been very friendly & affectionate towards all kennel staff & loves nothing more than a good fuss."

!["This lovely boy was brought into kennels after being found roaming as a stray. He was picked up in a sorry state, very dirty & covered in scars and cuts. We have aged him at around 2 years old & he is taller & chunkier than the average staffy. Initially after arriving at kennels he was very shut down & shy. With plenty of patience and treats from kennel staff, he is now much happier in himself. Staff lovingly named him “Bullseye”. Heartbreakingly at first bullseye would cower and flinch beneath you if you moved your hands too quickly & seemed of been an outdoor yard dog and had little human interaction. Bullseye had a bath to get him cleaned up & looking better & behaved so well and seemed to rather enjoy it! Bullseye needs an experienced home with the time and patience to build his confidence & give him the training he needs. Bullseye is very strong on the lead and does not seem to be housetrained. Bullseye does jump up – a lot! So will need a home without very young children. The wounds on his legs & neck look like punctures from dog bites & so understandably he is not keen on most other dogs. Bullseye needs a staffy loving home to give him all the kindness and love he’s missed out on."](https://www.thestar.co.uk/jpim-static/image/2023/08/02/9/bulleyes.jpeg?trim=777,0,369,0&width=800)
