Behind every rescue dog is a different story, and a number of dogs currently waiting for homes in Yorkshire have already faced difficult beginnings.
Some have arrived as strays, while others have lost the people they once called family, but all are now looking for a fresh start.
The dogs, from Helping Yorkshire Poundies and Thornberry Animal Sanctuary, each have their own needs and personalities, from older dogs looking for a quieter retirement home to younger dogs needing owners who understand their breed.
Among them is Marley, a 12-year-old Staffy cross who came into rescue after the loss of his owner and has since shown his foster carers what a gentle and loving companion he is.
There is also Coco, a Lhasa Apso who arrived in a poor condition but has blossomed into a trusting and affectionate dog, and Lyla, a playful bull breed who is hoping to find an experienced owner.
Take a look through the gallery below to see the adorable pups looking for their forever homes in Sheffield.
Details of all the dogs featured in the gallery, including their needs and personalities, are available from the rescues.

1. Biscotti is a five-year-old medium-sized bull breed mix with short legs, big ears and a long body. House-trained and calm, he settled brilliantly in foster care, enjoys two 30-minute walks a day and can be left alone for short periods. He could live with dog-savvy children aged eight and over and may need ongoing medication to manage an itchy skin condition.

2. Brenda is an estimated four-year-old Bulldog who was found as a stray. She enjoys gentle walks, walks well on the lead and is happy around other dogs, although she would prefer to be the only pet in her new home. Brenda is looking for a family who understand and love the Bulldog breed and can give her plenty of affection.
