Behind every rescue dog is a different story, and a number of dogs currently waiting for homes in Yorkshire have already faced difficult beginnings.
Some have arrived as strays, while others have lost the people they once called family, but all are now looking for a fresh start.
The dogs, from Helping Yorkshire Poundies and Thornberry Animal Sanctuary, each have their own needs and personalities, from older dogs looking for a quieter retirement home to younger dogs needing owners who understand their breed.
Among them is Marley, a 12-year-old Staffy cross who came into rescue after the loss of his owner and has since shown his foster carers what a gentle and loving companion he is.
There is also Coco, a Lhasa Apso who arrived in a poor condition but has blossomed into a trusting and affectionate dog, and Lyla, a playful bull breed who is hoping to find an experienced owner.
Take a look through the gallery below to see the adorable pups looking for their forever homes in Sheffield.
Details of all the dogs featured in the gallery, including their needs and personalities, are available from the rescues.

5. Poppy is a 10-year-old Basset Hound who is looking for a comfortable new home. She has previously lived with children and a cat, making her a great choice for many families. This much-loved breed is rarely seen in rescue, and Poppy is hoping to find a home where she can enjoy plenty of comfort and companionship.

6. Coco is a five-year-old Lhasa Apso who arrived in rescue in a poor condition but has shown herself to be a sweet, loving and trusting dog. She would love a home with access to a secure garden and could live with calm, similar-sized dogs and children aged 12 and over. Her new family will need to commit to regular grooming and coat care.

7. Dave is a seven-year-old small-sized Terrier cross with plenty of character. He is a happy and friendly dog who has previously lived with other dogs, cats and children. Dave would prefer to be the only dog in the home so he can enjoy plenty of attention, but could have similar-sized walking friends. He could also live with a confident cat and children aged eight and over.

8. Pip is a two-year-old French Bulldog crossbreed with a sweet nature and beautiful big brown eyes. A sensitive little dog, she was nervous when she first arrived but has shown her playful personality away from the kennel environment and loves playing with her toys. Pip will need to be the only dog in her new home with direct access to a secure garden. She is clean and settles well, and would love the chance to thrive in a loving home.
