Warning to Peak District walkers after five people stranded on hillside

A warning has been issued to walkers in the Peak District after five people became stranded on a hillside and a major rescue operation had to be mounted.

Mountain rescuers were called to help firefighters after the walkers became stuck on Elbow Ridge at Winnats Pass in Castleton.

Edale and Buxton mountain rescue teams both attended the incident yesterday, Wednesday, June 16, and the pass had to be closed while the rescue operation took place.

Edale Mountain Rescue Team described how five visitors had become ‘cragfast’ on the steep slopes of the Hope Valley beauty spot. While three eventually managed to get down themselves, two had to be helped to safety by firefighters.

“The pinnacles around Winnats Pass look so inviting, and it’s only when people who are not comfortable on steep ground look back, that it becomes apparent to how dangerous their situation is,” said the team.
