The Psalter: Sheffield restaurant wins two AA Rosettes in double award for city venue

Sheffield restaurant and hotel wins prestigious award

A Sheffield restaurant has been awarded Two AA Rosettes, as its connected hotel received Four AA Gold Stars.

Tom Lawson at The Psalter, the restaurant within the Psalter Lane hotel, has been recognised for its food, with the wider venue also praised for the quality of its accommodation.

The double award is the latest milestone for chef and restaurateur Tom Lawson, who has built The Psalter into a 20-bedroom hotel, restaurant and bar after leaving his previous restaurant business and setting out on his own.

Lawson said: “We’re absolutely thrilled. To receive Two AA Rosettes for Tom Lawson at The Psalter alongside Four Gold Stars for the hotel is a huge moment for everyone here.

“We set out to create something Sheffield could be proud of - great food, warm hospitality and a place people genuinely want to return to.”

The Psalter opened in 2024 after Lawson took on the site and transformed it into his first solo venture.

The project had been a long-held ambition. Lawson had previously dreamed of creating a restaurant with rooms in south-west Sheffield, before deciding to take The Psalter on himself.

He oversaw a major transformation of the building, including developing the kitchen and restaurant, with the venue now bringing together the hotel, restaurant, bar and events space under one roof.

The 20-bedroom hotel sits alongside Tom Lawson at The Psalter, an intimate restaurant serving modern British food.

The latest AA awards add to the growing recognition for the venue, which was listed in the Michelin Guide in 2025 and won Best Contemporary Restaurant at the Westside Restaurant Awards.

Lawson, who has also expanded his hospitality business with The Ladybower Inn in the Peak District, said the latest awards were recognition for the whole team.

“This recognition belongs to the whole team,” he said.

“Our chefs, front-of-house team, reception, housekeepers and everyone working behind the scenes have all played a part in making The Psalter what it is today.”

“Sheffield has so much to be proud of when it comes to independent food, drink and hospitality,” he said.

“For us, this isn’t the finish line. It’s encouragement to keep pushing, investing in our people and showing what independent hospitality in Sheffield can achieve.”
