The clever tip promises to reveal the perfect method for slicing cheese evenly – which, as fans of fromage will know, is a fine art.

A thick slice on a cracker is unwieldy and over-facing, while a piece that's disappointingly thin won’t please anyone.

Posting in a Facebook group where people share DIY advice and life hacks, a woman said the secret was to run an everyday potato peeler down the side of a block of cheese.

“Probably my daftest moment ever – however, works an absolute treat,” she said.

“Use a peeler to slice your block of cheese! Perfectly slim slices of cheese in a fraction of the time it takes me to use a knife.”

She added jokingly: “DISCLAIMER: I cannot be held legally responsible for any excess consumption of cheese that occurs as a result of trying this method out.”

The post received an enthusiastic thumbs-up from other members of the group who found the tip very helpful.

“Love it. Have been looking for something to slice cheese,” a member of the group wrote, while another said: “This is genius! How have I never thought of this?”

A further member wrote: “I have a cheese slice that does not slice cheese properly, this is brilliant! Definitely gonna try this.”

However, some pointed out that the technique might fail on crumbly varieties like Wensleydale.
