Two Steps, on Sharrow Vale Road, was established in 1895 as a ‘fried fish dealer’ and has remained on the same spot ever since – it is known for attracting long queues of diners, as well as for offering vegan and vegetarian options.

Over the years it has won praise from the likes of The Guardian and The Times newspapers, and singer Tony Christie once posed outside for the sleeve of his 2008 album Made In Sheffield.

After the Government announced its decision to impose a lockdown in order to enforce social distancing measures, Two Steps closed ‘with immediate effect’ on March 24.

But now the place has found a way to reopen with special temporary opening hours. Food is being served at lunchtime from midday to 2pm, and during evenings from 5pm to 8.30pm. The shop will be closed on Mondays and Sundays.

Fans of Two Steps expressed joy at the chip shop's comeback on social media.

“Brilliant! We’ve missed you,” said Rachel Atkinson on Facebook, and Catherine Oakley wrote: “Had fish and chips for lunch, very yummy.”

Meanwhile, Jamie Sharples simply commented: “There is hope now.”

There are two steps outside the shop’s front door, hence the name.
