The Star went to The York pub in Broomhill, Sheffield, for a Sunday roast dinner review.

The York is a historic pub standing tall on the corner of Glossop Road and Fulwood Road in Broomhill. It recently changed hands with new owners coming in, sprucing up the interior and revamping the menu.

I used to live near The York, it was my partner and I’s favourite Sunday roast if we were to go out for one. So, when the invitation came in to try the new chef’s Sunday lunch, I wasn’t going to say no.

Previously, I would always get the beef. It was brilliantly cooked and would melt in your mouth - but we always thought the portions were a tad small. It is safe to say, that is no longer a problem.

We were sat near the large window looking out over the Fulwood Road/Glossop Road junction, ordered drinks, then scoured the menu.

You have five ‘Sunday dinner’ options to choose from: British beef topside; Moss Valley pork shoulder; chicken supreme; squash, carrot and pecan nut roast; or the two meats special (beef and pork).

I, of course, went for the two meat special - just so I can try as much a possible and offer a proper review. My partner chose the beef and we shared a side of cauliflower cheese.

As mentioned, the portion sizes are not at all on the small side. These roasts came out piled high on fairly large plates.

It was topped with a huge, glorious-looking Yorkshire Pudding, rested on the beef and pork which sheltered the roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips and greens beneath - all covered in a lovely gravy.

Some dismantling was required - I moved the Yorkshire to the side and tried my best to expose some of the veggies below, but there was just that much of the beef and pork that I wasn’t quite able to.

I’ll tell you now to spare you the suspense, The York’s new Sunday roast is fantastic, not perfect, but nonetheless it was fantastic.

We felt the beef was a little chewier than on previous visits under the old ownership, and the Yorkshire was lacking a fluffy interior to counter a lovely, crisp facade.

Everything else though, tremendous.

The pork was tender and full of flavour. There was a lot of it too, I certainly didn’t feel undersold on it.

The roast potatoes had a real crunch on the outside, which was brilliantly contrasted by the soft, fluffy interior. The greens were bright and buttery.

Carrots and parsnips were cooked to perfection. They were soft and tasted delicious. And the cauliflower had a wonderful cheesy sauce and a crispy, cheesey top which was the absolute best part of it.

It was a struggle to even finish those main courses, but we couldn’t resist throwing puddings in there.

The chocolate brownies were wonderful. Rich, hard on the outside and gooey in the middle and topped with a brilliant chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream.

Sunday dinner at The York was absolutely cracking. It was our favourite in Sheffield under the previous owners and now think it’s only got better.
