Owners of Domo start new venture bringing deli, coffee and flowers to bustling corner of Kelham Island

Award-winning Sheffield restaurant launches third business

The team behind award-winning Sheffield restaurant Domo has announced plans for a new food venture in Kelham Island.

Mercato will be the latest project from the team, following the opening of Domo in Leeds back in June.

The new venue will primarily operate as an open production kitchen, where the team plans to make more of its products in-house.

But it will also be open to the public as a daytime deli and shop, selling coffee, focaccia sandwiches, deli goods, fresh flowers and homemade gelato.

Customers will also be able to buy fresh pasta and bottles of wine to take home.

The team said the project is intended to allow them to produce as much as possible themselves, with the aim of reducing their reliance on external suppliers and cutting their carbon footprint.

Mercato is being developed with 93FT, a brand, interior and digital studio which is also working on the venue’s furniture, fixtures and fit-out.

The team said Kelham Island felt like the right location because of their existing connection to the area, where they spend a lot of time as a family.

They also hope Mercato will become a community hub, combining food production with a small daytime venue.

Domo’s owners said they are now putting the finishing touches to the site before Mercato opens to the public.

Announcing the new venture, owners Sarah Elliot-Busceddu and her husband, Sardinia-born chef Raffaele "Rafa" Busceddu said: “You all know we love our little corner of Kelham island so much, our kids love it here and we spend so much time here as a family that this location felt so right for our next chapter.

“Introducing MERCATO, born from our dream to be able to produce absolutely everything in house, to reduce our carbon footprint and become our own supplier of absolutely everything we possibly can.

“Mercato will be primarily an open production kitchen however we decided it’s potential stretched further so working alongside our amazing friends at 93FT - Brand, Interior and Digital Studio & Bespoke Furniture, Fixtures and Fit Outs we are creating a beautiful little daytime venue with its own rhythm and purpose.

“You’ll be able to grab a coffee, a focaccia sandwich, some gorgeous deli goods, fresh flowers, homemade gelato on a warm afternoon, some fresh pasta & a bottle of vino to take home for tea, a deli, shop and community hub all in one.”

“We’re just putting the finishing touches to the site and we’re beyond excited to start production and open MERCATO to the community.”
