Sheffield history: 10 photos of the city in 1989, including Christmas lights on The Moor and Goodwin Fountain

This selection of photos from the archives shows just how much Sheffield has changed since 1989.

That was the year of the Hillsborough disaster, with one picture showing the sea of floral tributes left in the wake of the terrible tragedy. Restoration was also underway at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre, which had fallen into disrepair after being closed.

Other photos show how the Christmas lights on The Moor and Pinstone Street in the city centre looked back then, and the Goodwin Fountain, which stood at the top of Fargate for many years. The pictures show too how well-known businesses looked at the time, and the African Carribean Festival taking place that year.
