Teens complete 90 mile bike ride for childhood friend's terminally ill Sheffield mum

Money raised will help a Sheffield family “make special memories”

Two South Yorkshire teenagers have cycled 90 miles in a gruelling 14 hour ride to raise money for their friend’s terminally ill mother.

Maisie Everitt, aged 18, from Sheffield, and her friend Talia, also 18, from Rotherham, cycled from Rotherham to Scarborough on October 2, 2026.

They took on the challenge to raise money for their childhood friend, Liv’s mum, Lauren, 46, from Hackenthorpe, Sheffield.

Lauren was diagnosed with terminal stage 4 colon cancer in January 2026, after the disease spread from her bowel to her stomach lining, lymph nodes, both lungs and her liver.

Maisie said: “We used to play football with Liv when we were like nine. When we found out about Liv’s mum, that’s when we thought we’d do something for it.

“We were driving and she just mentioned about doing something, and a couple hours later we decided about the bike ride, so it was quite spontaneous.”

Maisie set up a Gofundme page on September 16, with the target of £10,000 - it’s currently just over £2000.

In preparation for the bike ride, Maisie said: “The day before, we went to Halfords and Decathlon and just got inner tubes and stuff if we would need them.

“My mum had gone through a route all the way to Scarborough and printed it all off.”

Despite having not actually cycled “that much before”, the pair of friends set off at 5am on October 2.

After a cold and dark start, Maisie shared how Talia turned to her and said: “We’ve underestimated this, haven’t we?”

To which Maisie agreed with her but thought, “We’ve got to do it”.

She said: “There was a point where we were riding on this country lane, and Tal just went into a ditch and went over handlebars and cut all her hands and legs. She laid on the floor for a bit, and I was like, come on, we’re going to have to complete it.

“So she powered through that.”

14 hours after setting off from Rotherham, they both arrived in Scarborough at 9.30pm to be greeted by their families.

Lauren wasn’t well enough to be there, but Liv Facetimed her, and she was “crying and sobbing”.

Maisie said: “She was like, I’m overwhelmed, I can’t believe you’ve done this. I’m so grateful.

“Liv was grateful too and she was overwhelmed.”

Money raised from their fundraiser will go towards helping Lauren and her family “make special memories”.

To anyone who has already donated, Maisie said: “We appreciate it, any donation, no matter how big or small helps. Thank you for contributing.”
