‘If we fight, we can win’ – Sheffield health workers to march for increased pay

The protest - which is one of at least 33 taking place across the country - will begin with a rally at Barker’s Pool at 11am followed by a march through the city centre.

The Sheffield event is being backed by Sheffield Save Our NHS and the Sheffield Trades Union Council as well as local union branches representing health workers.

Ruth Milsom of Sheffield Save Our NHS said: "The coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated really clearly who the key workers are on whom we all depend. It's beyond me why government ministers think it's acceptable to pay nurses and other essential workers such low wages - barely enough to pay for rent and food in some parts of the country.

“These highly skilled people give of themselves tirelessly every day, and are badly rewarded - it's just inhuman. Nurses have taken a huge hit financially with real-terms pay cuts during the years of Tory austerity; now they've taken another big hit for us all by working on the front line to give outstanding care to the very sick in this pandemic.

“French health workers have just won over their government to achieve a pay rise - now we're taking to the streets in Sheffield and across England to demand the same for our nurses. If we fight, we can win!"
