Have a go at learning crown green bowling at Sheffield club's free sessions

Crookes Club on Mulehouse Road has won a National Lottery community grant to offer bowling lessons.

The free sessions will start on Saturday, June 12 at 10am at the club and are free to attend and open to all.

The club, which is 102 years old, says that “age and previous bowling experience are immaterial, anyone aged 5 to 105 are welcome to come along and try their hand at Crown Green Bowling”.

All equipment and tuition and refreshments will be provided by the club and professional bowling instructors will be on hand to explain the difference between a thumb and a finger bowl, bias and how to best make use of the crown.

There is no need to register, just turn up on any Saturday from now until the end of July. All you need bring with you is a pair of flat shoes.

“Our aim in providing these sessions it to not only introduce people to the fun that can be had playing Crown Green Bowls but to also allow the local community to have a little gentle exercise in a Covid-safe environment,” said Maurice Champeau, who is the club’s general manager.

"The benefits to both physical and mental health of playing outdoor sports is already well proven and we just want to do our bit for the local community.”
