But there will be a number of new rules in place for fitness enthusiasts keen to make up for lost time.

Sheffield City Trust, which runs gyms at leisure centres including Ponds Forge, Hillsborough and Westfield, has outlined the steps visitors must follow to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Capacity will be reduced to allow gym users to socially distance.

Customers must book their sessions, either online or over the phone, up to seven days in advance.

You must book a session start time, with entry slots available every 15 minutes from opening until half an hour before closure. Turnstiles will allow entry from the session start time for 15 minutes.

People who are unable to attend must cancel. If they fail to attend their session without doing so they will be charged a ‘dishonour fee’.

Visitors whould arrive dressed ‘workout ready’, with changing facilities and showers available only after the session.

People must wear a face covering while inside the venue, though they can remove it while exercising.

Visitors will not be allowed into the venue until 15 minutes before their session begins, they must register on arrival at reception and they should follow signs to the gym as the route may have changed to enable social distancing.

People must not enter the gym until their session start time and they are asked to refrain from touching their face, to sanitise their hands regularly, to sneeze or cough into the crease of their elbow and to observe social distancing at all times.

Visitors should wipe down all equipment before and after use with the spray and disposable cloth provided.

Equipment has been spaced out to allow for social distancing but a full range of kit will be available for customers to use.

The water fountains will be out of action so people are asked to bring their own water bottles.

Vending machines will be available but cafes within the venues will initially remain closed.
