Sixth coronavirus testing centre to open in Sheffield

A sixth coronavirus testing centre will open in Sheffield next month as the city’s infection rate continues to rise.

The pedestrian access only facility will be a new “winterised model of a container style unit” located at Shipton Street Car Park behind the 2nd Zest Centre building in Upperthorpe – situated opposite the main Zest Centre building.

Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, Greg Fell, said: “Since we have moved into Tier 3 restrictions, it is more important than ever that we enable everyone who needs to get a test in Sheffield the ability to do so and quickly.

“If you are feeling poorly or think you have symptoms, no matter how mild, you must stay at home and contact NHS test and trace to arrange a test. Our message is simple, Covid-19 has not gone away and we need our communities’ support in stopping the spread and to help protect our loved ones.”

Testing will be available at the new facility on its Pilot opening days on Tuesday, 3 November from 2pm until 5pm and Wednesday, 4 November from 10am to 5pm.

It will be fully operational from 8am until 8pm seven days a week for the next three months from Thursday 5 November.

Sheffield also has testing centres in Sharrow, Darnall and Burngreave as well as in Broomhall and a drive-through regional testing centre at Meadowhall Shopping Centre.

Susan Hird, consultant in Public Health at Sheffield City Council said the city’s infection rate was between 400 and 450 per 100,000 people as of Tuesday (27 October).
