'It means so much': Sheffield's amazing NHS workers react to clap for carers

NHS workers on the frontline of the battle against coronavirus in Sheffield have told how much yesterday’s huge round of applause meant to them.

People across the city joined those across the country by coming to their windows and doorways and putting their hands together yesterday, Thursday, March 26, at 8pm, to show their gratitude for the amazing job being done by everyone in the NHS, from doctors and nurses to cleaners.

It was such a moving display of unity in these uncertain times there have been calls to make it a weekly event and even to declare March 26 a national day of thanks for the NHS.

Leonie Bannerman, who is a health care assistant, said: “Thankyou to everyone that took part in the appraisal for us staff! It was so touching! I’m proud to work for the NHS!”

Jenny McCambridge wrote: “As someone who has just got home from a 12-hour shift working for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals I really appreciate those who spent a few minutes of their day giving a round of applause and a few fireworks, bell ringing etc for all the people working through this awful time. Thank you, it means so much.”

And Rachel Evans said: “On behalf of myself, my husband and our three adult children who are all nurses working for the NHS a huge thank you for the amazing show of gratitude by our neighbours in Grenoside. The noise was deafening and was so moving - thanks.”
