Sheffield's 240 confirmed coronavirus cases are the fifth most in the UK

Sheffield has the UK’s fifth highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases, after the figure rose by 66 in a single day to 240.

Only in Birmingham, Hampshire and the London boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth have more people now tested positive for COVID-19.

Eight people have now died in Sheffield after contracting the virus, with the latest four deaths coming on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday but only announced yesterday.

Across the UK, 11,658 people have now tested positive for COVID-19, following a daily rise of 2,129, and the disease has claimed 578 lives.

Although Birmingham has the most confirmed cases outside London, with 290, it is considerably larger than Sheffield.

In other cities many fewer people have tested positive, with 72 confirmed cases in Liverpool, 67 in Leeds, 55 in Manchester and just four in Hull.
