However, adults in these premises including staff and visitors should wear face coverings where social distancing between adults is not possible.

Some pupils, students and adults may also be exempt from wearing face coverings which apply in early years, schools and colleges if they meet the criteria.

Those who will not be asked to adhere to the rule are those who cannot put on, wear or remove a face covering because of physical impairment or disability, illness or mental health difficulties.

Those who rely on lip reading, clear sound or facial expression to communicate also fall in this category.

Meanwhile, secondary pupils and college students will be required to wear a face covering (unless they are exempt) in classrooms and during most activities, unless it is possible to socially distance.

They should also wear one when they are moving around inside school buildings, such as in corridors and communal areas where social distancing is difficult.

This will not apply if a face covering makes it difficult to take part in exercise, for example PE lessons. Face coverings do not need to be worn when outdoors on the premises.

Sheffield council said the wearing of face coverings in classrooms is being introduced for a limited time until Easter.

It will be kept under review and guidance will be updated then.
