Sheffield schoolboy raises over £200 for Children in Need during self-isolation

Bay Hamlet, a Year 3 pupil at Rivelin Primary School, ran a mile every day between November 4 and 13 on the treadmill in his family home to raise money for Children in Need.

The seven-year-old, who has raised over £220 on his Just Giving page, said he chose the charity as he “wanted to make other children happy.”

Sheenagh Middleton, headteacher of Rivelin Primary, said Bay is a remarkable young man who was determined to make his time away from school a positive experience.

She said: “Throughout school we do raise about what we call character muscles, but they’re character traits, and we do alot about those. For me Bay just displays these in abundance.

"Each week we look at a different character muscle and look at that in what the children and promote and praise that at the end of the week in our celebration assemblies.

"We’ve also speak about ‘always’ children and he epitomises an always child. We’re so proud of him and he’s just a remarkable role model.

"An always child is always doing the right thing, always caring for people and always looking out for other people. They’re doing the right thing all the time and Bay is exactly that.”

Part of an active family, Bay usually spends a lot of time taking part in outdoor activities and was determined to beat his time record for the previous day during the charity challenge, with his best time coming in at 11 minutes and three seconds.

He was taken out of school to self-isolate for 10 days after his parents tested positive for coronavirus – although he did not have the virus himself.

During his time away from school another student within his ‘bubble’ also received a positive Covid-19 result, meaning he was unable to go back when planned.

Rivelin Primary is now looking forward to welcoming Bay and the rest of the pupils back to school on Friday, November 20.

“We’re just so proud of him,” Mrs Middleton added. “He’s just a remarkable individual and we’re absolutely amazed by what he has done.”
