Councillor Abtisam Mohamed, Sheffield Council’s Cabinet member for Education and Skills, said: “All children should be attending school. However, in Sheffield we do not intend to issue fines for not attending.

“Throughout this difficult time our priority has been to support our children and families.

“We know there will, understandably, be a level of anxiety that we need to address with understanding, explanation and reassurances.

“If children are not attending school, our team of staff will work closely with the children and their families to help get them back to school as soon as possible.

“We will keep this position under review.”
