Here are the odds of appealing your child's place in Sheffield if you don't get the secondary school you want
The chances are higher than you may think - Sheffield is in the top 20 for successful appeals in the country
Sheffield parents have better odds of appealing their child’s place at secondary school than the vast majority of the country.
Research by boarding-school promotion firm Chapel & Tuck has revealed how often households in England actually get anywhere if they disagree with where their child starts in Y7.
It shows that four in five school appeals fail nationally - but where you live can make an enormous difference.

For example, many appeals for school places in London go nowhere - in 2026, households in Tower Hamlets successfully changed their child’s school placement 1.4 per cent of the time, while those in Haringey saw no successful appeals at all.
In contrast, the most lenient region to appeal a school placement in 2026 was Sunderland, where the local authority’s decision was overturned 88.4 per cent of the time.
It comes as the deadline for secondary school applications closes in Sheffield on October 16, less than a month away.
Missing the deadline can reduce a child’s chances of being offered one of their preferred schools.

This is the 20th highest rate in the country - but is still a decrease on 2025, when Sheffield’s rate was 35.3 per cent.

The most exclusive schools in Sheffield can turn away more pupils than they even have places to offer - such is the case at Sheffield’s Mercia School, which once again had two Y7 children vying for every seat in class in 2026.
It turned down 248 pupils to fill its 194 available spots, an oversubscription rate of 128 per cent. Mercia sent five pupils off to Oxbridge at this year's A-Level Results Day, with 58.2 per cent of all grades awarded at A or A*.
For comparison, Tapton School was the second most in demand secondary school in Sheffield for 2026/27 after turning away 154 pupils to fill its 268 pupils, an oversubscription rate of 58 per cent. Tapton also said 2026 was its best ever GCSE Results Day, with 25 per cent of all grades awarded at grades 9-8.
