Fans of former One Direction star Liam Payne will gather for a memorial in Sheffield city centre following the musician’s tragic death.

Liam Payne sadly died after falling from the balcony of his third floor hotel room in Buenos Aires in Argentina. The music star rose to fame as part of One Direction, which was assembled on the talent show X Factor with Liam, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan.

Jessica Leeming, aged 26, from Sheffield, has organised a local memorial event with two others she met online, after seeing similar events held in London, Manchester and Birmingham.

She said: “We’re all hoping to turn up with flowers, candles... someone is bringing a speaker so we will sing some songs.

“Everyone is welcome to come whether they have been a fan from the beginning or the end.”

Fans of the boyband, which split in 2016, were heartbroken by the news of Liam’s death in South America. Supporters of the 31-year-old singer in Buenos Aires gathered in the hours shortly after his passing with candles and flowers and were filmed singing lyrics from the star’s songs.

“I have been a One Direction fan since I was 12,” Jessica said, “I’m now 26.

“It was really difficult. It felt like we’d lost a family member. It was really upsetting.”

The memorial will be held outside Sheffield Town Hall from 3pm on Sunday, October 20, 2024. Attendees are invited to bring flowers, cards and letters.
