New green space on the way for Gleadless Valley residents as work begins on new Spotswood pocket park

Work has started on a new pocket park in Sheffield, marking the beginning of the regeneration of Gleadless Valley.

Contractor equipment and shipping containers were brought onto the site outside Holy Cross Church earlier this week.

The area will be turned into a new green space for local people to enjoy.

The pocket park will include natural play features for children, public art and open space for residents to meet friends and family or take part in community events.

The plans have been shaped with input from people who live nearby.

Alexis Krachai, Independent Chair of the Gleadless Valley Regeneration Board said: “When we brought our Vision for the Valley to the public last month (December 2025) we made it clear this was a time for actions and not just words.

“So to start the new year with actions beginning on this site is us showing that commitment as a project. We hope people will love the park when it opens and come out to use it over the summer months.”

Contractor Horticon moved onto the site on Monday (5 January) to prepare for the work.

The project is expected to be finished by the summer.

The work began in the same week that South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, visited Gleadless Valley.

On Wednesday (January 7), he was shown around the area by the Gleadless Valley Regeneration Team.

During the visit, the Mayor heard about plans to clean up fly-tipping, tackle anti-social behaviour and deliver new homes in the area.

He also saw work getting underway on the new pocket park.

Mr Coppard said he is fully behind the plans, adding: “We will be backing it all the way.”
