Wayne’s photo project becomes a book celebrating life beyond the lens

Award-winning South Yorkshire film maker Wayne Sables is celebrating the end of his year-long photographic challenge with the launch of a book capturing the pictorial adventure.
Using the same camera every day - a Leica Q2 - Doncaster-based Wayne spent the whole of 2025 creating a portfolio of 365 images reflecting on his life and environment.
The Beyond the Lens project has featured a daily image that could be of any subject, including the natural world, street scenes, family shots and even images of pets and colleagues - some quite natural and others more stylised.
And now that the final image has been taken, Wayne has selected 200 of his favourite shots for a new book, Beyond the Lens: a 365 Day Photographic Journal.
The book, which costs £15 and will be available by the end of February via the Wayne Sables Project website, not only features Wayne’s photos but also encourages the reader to do the same, with a series of simple tasks - there’s even space to create an album.
Wayne said that working on the project had given him a new perspective on the work he does.
“It fulfils a long time ambition but what has been really great about this project is that it has really made me fall back in love with photography,” he explained.
“The book is designed as a creative journal for anyone wanting to take up
photography, looking for a fresh challenge or ready to explore their
image-making in a new way.
“Any camera – from a smartphone to a dedicated camera – is more than good enough to begin.
“Beyond the Lens is not about grand landscapes or elaborate productions.
“It is about finding stories in familiar streets, shifting light, and quiet details and as you move through thee pages, the invitation is simple - slow down, notice more and let these images and exercises nudge you to create a daily practice that is uniquely yours, with whatever camera you have in your hand today.
“The book can be seen simply as a coffee table art book but I’ve also designed it as a creative manual that you can pick up, look at and be inspired to do the same.”
Beyond the Lens also features a foreword by film & immersive content producer Alistair Maclean-Clark.
Alistair commented: “Beyond the Lens begins as a simple commitment - one photograph every day for a year with the same camera but it becomes something much richer than a technical challenge.
“It’s a quiet visual diary shaped by curiosity, discipline and an honest response to the world as it appears.
“These photographs don’t chase spectacle - they find strength in close observation, familiar streets, shifting light.
“Beyond the Lens is about the act of making images as much as the images themselves.
“Some days the photograph feels resolved, other days it doesn’t - but both are valued, which gives the book its authenticity and reminds us that daily creative practice is about showing up, paying attention and staying curious.
“It reveals a visual artist who knows that the most compelling stories often live in quiet details, and who has the discipline, sensitivity, and courage to keep looking for them.”
