New research has revealed that almost one in two people (48 per cent) across Sheffield experience feelings of loneliness at Christmas.

The research, commissioned by Meadowhall in partnership with the Mental Health Foundation, also found that 43 per cent of those surveyed in Sheffield said they wouldn’t know where to turn for help when struggling with loneliness or isolation, rising to almost half (49 per cent) reporting not feeling comfortable confiding in someone they trust about how they feel – a tendency that increases with age.

In response, Meadowhall has teamed up with local charities Age UK Sheffield and Andy’s Man Club to help raise awareness of the support they can provide to people of all ages experiencing feelings of loneliness and isolation at Christmas.

Age UK Sheffield works to support older people across the city to live happy, fulfilling and independent lives, helping to ensure older people of all cultures and backgrounds feel valued, connected and actively engaged within the local community.

Meanwhile, Andy’s Man Club provides free peer-to-peer support groups to help end the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and help men through the power of conversation.

Meadowhall will be donating advertising space to the two charities, helping to signpost the vital support they provide over the festive period, while also encouraging donations. Adverts will feature across its digital screens, social media and website throughout the festive period, with shoppers also able to make donations through the centre’s website.

Building on last year’s partnership, the centre is also teaming up with Age UK Sheffield and local school children to create heartfelt Christmas cards that will be shared with elderly members of the community throughout the festive period. Meadowhall will also be celebrating the return of the Christmas edition of its monthly Tea Dance, bringing together Age UK Sheffield, Meadowhall’s tea dancers, and local school children on Monday 15th December with live music and a free hot drink.

Darren Pearce, centre director for Meadowhall said: “Christmas is a special time that brings people throughout our community together, however sadly we know it can be a lonelier time for some.

“As well as raising awareness of the support Age UK Sheffield and Andy’s Man Club can provide to people experiencing loneliness and social isolation, we’re excited to bring generations together through our festive tea dance and Christmas cards initiative, and we of course hope to raise lots of much-needed donations to help these amazing organisations continue their important work.”

Alexa Knight, director of policy and influence for the Mental Health Foundation, said: “We can all feel lonely at times, but when loneliness lasts for a long period, it can have a profound impact on our mental health. At Christmas, this can feel even harder because the portrayal of the season as full of joy and togetherness can deepen feelings of isolation if we are lonely.

“Working with Meadowhall allows us to shine a light on an issue that is often hidden, encourage open conversations, and connect people with the support and understanding they need this Christmas and beyond. It’s important to note that loneliness isn’t something individuals should have to fix alone; we all have a role to play. Taking time to check in with people around us, offering a listening ear, or creating spaces where others feel welcome can make a real difference.”

The research also revealed that whilst loneliness is often associated with older generations, younger people are increasingly struggling too, with more than a third (34 per cent) of 18–24-year-olds in the UK anticipating greater feelings of loneliness this year.

Social media also emerged as a key influence, with one in five Sheffielders (22 per cent) saying that online platforms make them feel more alone at Christmas, whilst financial pressures (40 per cent) and not having a partner to share Christmas with (28 per cent) were the key reasons behind feelings of disconnection.

Simon Mayo, area lead for Andy’s Man Club, South Yorkshire, said: “We offer a safe space for guys aged 18 and over to talk to others who understand what it's like to be going through a bit of a storm. Christmas can be particularly tough, and we're grateful to be partnering with Meadowhall to reach more men in Sheffield who might need support. Every bit of awareness helps get more guys through the door for a brew and a chance to get things off their chest. We want every man to know: it's not weak to talk"

A spokesperson at Age UK Sheffield said: “We are excited to be part of this growing movement to raise awareness of loneliness and isolation among older people. At Age UK Sheffield, we are continuously working towards a future where no older person experiences loneliness or poverty. By working together, we hope to bring people together, strengthen connections, and create a more inclusive community for all.

“The Christmas Tea Dance, in particular, is always a fantastic opportunity for intergenerational learning and connection. We see individuals engaging with activities in unique and meaningful ways, rediscovering joy, and feeling a renewed sense of belonging during the festive period.”

Throughout the festive period, Meadowhall will also be hosting a series of fun festive activities for all ages – from the Magical Winterland complete with a Winter Spectacular Circus, Christmas markets, cosy Après Bar, funfair rides and of course the magical Santa’s Grotto, to the Christmas Cirque with live performances within the centre and this year’s brand-new light show outside the Oasis.
