Plans revealed to turn landmark 124-year-old Rotherham pub into apartments

Plans have been lodged to convert a former pub in Rotherham town centre into nine apartments.

Built in 1903 as the Wellington Inn Free House, the former Wellington Boot on Westgate most recently housed the Get Sorted Academy of Music, a charity which provided free music lessons.

The charity left the building in July 2017, and the building has stood vacant since, leaving it at “increasing risk of it being subject to anti-social behaviour and vandalism,” according to planning documents.

The application has been lodged by LNA Interiors, who hope to turn the vacant property into nine apartments.

If approved, there would be eight apartments in the main three-storey building with an additional apartment within an outbuilding to the rear of the site.

These will comprise of five one beds and four two bed apartments.

Planning documents state that he building is not listed, but is within Rotherham’s town centre conservation area.

“The site was last in active use as a community facility in 2017, following the last occupier deciding to vacate the property, resulting in the closure [of] the music school,” states the planning statement.

“The property is approaching five years of standing vacant, with no active interest since being sold in 2018.”

“The proposed scheme utilises a highly sustainable and accessible location, and therefore delivery of parking provision is not required.

“The change of use and external changes will be of benefit by safeguarding the long term future of the building.”

One objection has been lodged, stating that the proposals would “fundamentally change the character of the building”.
