Leeds Building Society promises to keep Sheffield branch open for six years amid widespread closures

"We know that for many people in Sheffield having access to a local branch still matters.”

Leeds Building Society has promised to keep its Sheffield branch open for six years.

The commitment to the site on Pinstone Street forms part of a nationwide pledge to keep all 51 branches open until at least September 2031.

In August, NatWest made a similar promise, not to close its branch at 42 High Street in the city centre until at least 2029.

The pledges come amid widespread closures as services move online.

Lloyds bank is closing its branch at 1 High Street in Sheffield city centre in January.

Halifax on Middlewood Road, Hillsborough, is due to shut permanently after nearly 50 years on January 11.

NatWest closed a branch on Ecclesall Road at Hunter’s Bar last year, leaving just one other branch in Sheffield, at Crystal Peaks.

The bank also closed the last cash machine at the Hallamshire Hospital in April.

Lloyds closed branches on The Moor and Intake in 2022, Chapeltown and Eckington in 2023. It has one other branch in Sheffield, in Hillsborough.

Graham Binns, head of Leeds Building Society’s branch network, said people liked face-to-face banking.

"We know that for many people in Sheffield having access to a local branch still matters.

“Whether it's opening a savings account, getting help to protect themselves from fraud, or simply speaking to someone face-to-face, our branches provide a service that many members value.”
