The Shiregreen Lane venue, which has been derelict since 2018, was given a stay of execution in February when council officers refused an application to bulldoze it. At the time, councillor Peter Price, who represents Shiregreen and used to hold surgeries at the club, warned there were no long-term grounds to refuse development.

He admitted he had ‘had almost given up hope’ until new plans emerged in July to convert the concert room into a youth centre and boxing gym, with the lounge turned into a sports bar.

Councillor Garry Weatherall, Labour member for Shiregreen and Brightside, provided an update on negotiations on Monday, August 24.

He said: “There’s a lot of things still to iron out. We’re in the middle of the process at the moment. We’re having some meetings to facilitate all sides to get the outcome we all want, and that’s to keep Shiregreen Working Mens Club open.

"It’s early stages and we’re working to that goal. We’re just pulling everything together, it’s a little bit more complicated than what we first thought.”

Although a sports bar was originally being considered, Coun Weatherall said that is no longer the case.

He added: "The owner is just going to open it up as a pub. The front area is going to be a pub and the back is going to be a community area. It’s a fantastic news story for our area. If we pull it off it will be great for the kids.

“It’s all about the kids and this is just another thing we’re trying to do for the area.”

Eyre Investments, who own the building, previously wanted to demolish it and turn it into flats but are now happy to work with locals to create a community asset.

The club’s members are also prepared to help out with the cost of adapting the concert room and Coun Price previously said St Vincents Amateur Boxing Club, who would occupy the new boxing gym, could access council funding to help pay for the renovation.
