In recent years timelines have slipped due to the pandemic, Brexit, the war in Ukraine and soaring inflation.
But as 2025 arrives, we can see which developments will come to fruition this year.
Acknowledging the fluidity of forecasting, our list also includes a few we sincerely hope will happen as the 2020s reach their midpoint.

5. Castlegate
Okay, this is technically due to complete in spring 2026 but you never know. After centuries of being buried by activities including steelmaking, the foundations of Sheffield’s once mighty Norman castle are set to go on display, surrounded by a nice park. The project is also set to ‘daylight’ the confluence of the city’s two most important rivers: the Don and Sheaf. | SCC

6. Moorfoot
People have been talking about turning Sheffield’s biggest office into flats for a year or two. Government body Homes England currently has a soft spot for the city, chipping in £67m for new neighbourhoods around Shalesmoor and buying the former Wickes building on Moore Street, also earmarked for flats. Hopefully 2025 will herald a decision on whether Moorfoot will become 714 apartments. | scc

7. Cole Brothers
Renamed Cole Store by developers Urban Splash, 2025 should see some of the ground floor come back into use, probably as small shops and a cafe on Cambridge Street, facing Leah’s Yard. | Urban Splash

8. Event Central
This large former shop opposite Marks and Spencer on Fargate will be converted into a flagship events space when builders get going in 2025. It’s had to wait until the revamp of Fargate is complete - during which time several other events spaces have emerged including Bethel Chapel on Cambridge Street, the former Cole Brothers, the Salvation Army Citadel on Cross Burgess Street (now owned by the council) and the former Gaumont Theatre on Barker’s Pool (also owned by the council). | University Of Sheffield
