Sheffield is braced for a winter of discontent amid tough new restrictions which come into force this week.

There were 418 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to 10 October, the latest date for which reliable data is available. The average area in England had 81.

Tough new restrictions on daily life come into force from Wednesday, with the city’s director of Public Health warning further draconian measures could be on the way.

This was the scene in Sheffield city centre as the local restrictions came into force.
