Atkinsons in Sheffield issues statement after barriers go up for construction of bike lane
“Thank you for your patience while these improvements are carried out, and for continuing to support your local independent department store.”
Sheffield’s most famous shop has told customers it is open as usual as a bike lane is built outside its doors.
Atkinsons said all departments remain open after barriers went up on Charter Row.

In a post on Facebook it said: “You may have noticed the cycle lane improvement works taking place outside our store. While the area looks a little different at the moment, Atkinsons is open as usual, and all departments remain open and ready to welcome you.
“Thank you for your patience while these improvements are carried out, and for continuing to support your local independent department store. We look forward to seeing you soon!”
A dedicated two-way cycle route is being installed on the Sainsburys and Atkinsons side of Charter Row and Moore Street.
The project includes upgraded pavements, landscaping and a signal controlled crossing at Fitzwilliam Gate.
It is part of the Connecting Sheffield scheme to improve walking and wheeling across the city and will connect up with new bike lanes on Pinstone and Surrey streets and Arundel Gate.

A city council spokesperson said last month: “We will create more attractive streets for people to spend time in, and give you more choice in how you get around.
“When the work is complete, it will be easier, safer and more pleasant to travel into and around the city centre by walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport.”
A dedicated bike lane currently runs along the top section of Charter Row round to The Moor and Pinstone Street.
