New bike lanes and pavements on Charter Row in Sheffield city centre to make walking and wheeling easier

“We will create more attractive streets for people to spend time in, and give you more choice in how you get around”

Two new bike lanes will be constructed in Sheffield city centre, starting with a fortnight of overnight works.

A dedicated two-way cycle route will be installed on the Sainsburys and Atkinsons side of Charter Row and Moore Street. A one-way route will be installed on the other side, Sheffield City Council says.

On Moore Street, painted bike lanes will be replaced by segregated cycle tracks on both sides, with the outbound road reduced to one lane over a short section to provide room.

Work starts on Monday, July 6, with two weeks of construction from 9pm-4am from Monday to Thursday, to reduce traffic disruption.

After that, works will be from 7.30am-5.30pm Monday to Friday.

The project includes upgraded pavements, landscaping and a signal controlled crossing at Fitzwilliam Gate.

It is part of the Connecting Sheffield scheme to improve walking and wheeling across the city and will connect up with new bike lanes on Pinstone and Surrey streets and Arundel Gate.

A city council spokesperson said: “We will create more attractive streets for people to spend time in, and give you more choice in how you get around.

“When the work is complete, it will be easier, safer and more pleasant to travel into and around the city centre by walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport.”

Temporary traffic lights will operate on Moore Street during the works, they added.

A dedicated bike lane currently runs along the top section of Charter Row round to The Moor and Pinstone Street.
