The good news is you don’t need to go far to enjoy some hidden and lesser-known gems away from the usual mass destinations. Here are 13 for you to discover.
9. Beauchief Abbey
One of the oldest buildings in Sheffield, Beauchief Abbey is a medieval monastic house, now parish church, in Beauchief. It features a remarkably intact main tower, quaint chapel, interesting graveyard and is surrounded by ancient woodland. One Tripadvisor reviewer said: ‘A very pleasant place to wander around for an hour or two…good signage and information.’ Is open Sunday mornings for services and on special occasions. Photo: .
10. Grey to Green
It’s amazing how a few flowers and grasses and a bit of distance from noisy traffic can creat a ‘calm refuge’. But that’s what the planting in front of Sheffield Crown Court does. And these days it extends up Snig Hill. There’s also a lovely section by the River Don in Castlegate. Photo: Alex Moore
11. Shire Brook Valley Nature Reserve
This RSPB site is reclaimed from a sewage works and landfill site - but don’t let that put you off. After reclamation, it is today a 100-acre haven for wildlife with its mixture of old and new woodland and meadows. Pictured is the view of Carr Forge Dam off Stone Lane Normanton Springs. 12. 70-Acre Hill
Some think the view from the top of 70-Acre Hill in Tinsley is the finest in the city. It is certainly panoramic and full of new views of familiar landmarks. It’s also in a rarely-visited, green space between the Parkway, Darnall and the old Sheffield City Airport. One for the explorer who thinks they’ve seen it all. Photo: ,
