The good news is you don’t need to go far to enjoy some hidden and lesser-known gems away from the usual mass destinations. Here are 13 for you to discover.
5. Five Weirs Walk
Fantastic riverside walk from Lady’s Bridge in the city centre to Meadowhall that combines - and contrasts - nature, industry and history. Walk or cycle a track that takes you behind factories and away from roads to create a mostly tranquil but always fascinating amble down the mighty Don. Serious money was spent on signage, railings and information boards. A true jewel in Sheffield’s crown. (Sadly one section was damaged in storms in 2019 and remains closed.) Photo: David Walsh
6. Amphitheatre
Sheffield’s most Instagrammable view. This tiered area just below South Street near Park Hill flats has breathtakingly close views of the city centre and catches the setting sun. Worth combining with a stroll to Clay Wood Bank and the Cholera Monument. Photo: .
7. Lake Waverley
Waverley, near Treeton, is famous for hundreds of new homes on the old Orgreave Coking Works site. But there are still acres of reclaimed open space including Waverley Lakes and Park. One for the connoisseur. Photo: .
8. Limb Valley
The Ordnance Survey calls the Limb Valley a hidden woodland walk that offers a leisurely yet explorative route through woodlands rich in old growth. Starting from Ecclesall Road South near Whirlow Brook Park, it stretches all the way to Sheephill Road, Ringinglow, which leads out to the Peak. Photo: .
