Latest understanding of Di'Shon Bernard Sheffield Wednesday saga after cryptic social media post

Sheffield Wednesday social media was kicked into a frenzy of speculation on Monday evening when Jamaica international Di’Shon Bernard posted a cryptic message amid continued uncertainty over his future.

Bernard, who joined the club last summer and played an important role in their survival effort under Danny Röhl, was offered a new deal at the expiry of his initial one-year contract as per the club’s released and retained list back in May. Talks have continued and are believed to have been parked while he represented his country at the Copa America.

The late night social media activity posted to Bernard’s Instagram showed an image of packed luggage and the caption ‘Ready for the next chapter’, which some supporters have taken as an indication he will move on to sign for another club.

However, as in-line with the status of The Star’s understanding throughout the summer, it is believed that the Owls remain hopeful of re-signing Bernard and that the saga has not been closed either way as of yet. That stance remains following the defender’s cryptic Instagram post.

Speaking from the club’s pre-season training camp at St George’s Park last Thursday, Owls boss Röhl suggested that both player and club were keen on making a return happen - but that work was continuing on striking a deal that worked for all parties. On Friday Wednesday will travel to Germany for a second training camp that will take in two friendlies across the border in Austria.

“It is still a position we are looking in,” Röhl told The Star. “Dish was in the tournament (Copa America), which makes him a little bit different to other players. You want to let them have the focus for the tournament and now we are seeing what we can do.

“It’s always from both sides, it’s not just about the dream. We have to find a way. If we can do it, then it could be a very good option to take him. He was a big part of the last season for me and for the team, but again we have to work behind the scenes. You have seen how we bring players in every week; players, players. Let’s have a look.”
