Winger Ross Wallace is desperate to play a big part in Sheffield Wednesday’s promotion tilt.

The 31-year-old, who featured prominently in the Owls reaching the Championship Play-Off Final, has started three of their last four fixtures on the bench.

Wallace, capped once by Scotland back in 2009, was introduced as a second half substitute in the matches against Huddersfield Town, Queens Park Rangers and Derby County, with his only start since the last international break coming in the draw at Cardiff City.

But the former Sunderland, Preston North End and Burnley man is determined to win his place back in the starting line-up.

“I want to play every game but that’s the same with the whole squad,” he told The Star. “But obviously when you get your chance and play, you have to be sharp when you come on and hurt the other team.”

Although Wallace is still searching for his first goal during the 2016/17 campaign, the ex-Celtic trainee is happy with his own form.

He said: “I think I have picked up my level since the last international break but I don’t think my level ever really dropped.

“It is just my position in the team changed a little bit at the start of the season. I wasn’t playing on the wing and I was told to do that. I ended up playing with Barry [Bannan] in midfield and that’s the way the manager wanted me to play.

“People are used to me playing on the wing. I can still do that but I mix and match more.”

Wallace is convinced the Owls are well-equipped to go one better than last year.

“We have got a good squad of players - a stronger squad than what we had last season,” he said. “The manager can mix and match.

“Last year, we never had enough bodies to do that but this year he can chop and change as the games go on.”
