Alessio Da Cruz had barely stepped foot in the country before he got a message from fellow Dutchman Joey Pelupessy welcoming him to Sheffield Wednesday.

The 23-year-old Parmo loanee, who arrived in South Yorkshire in the final week of the January transfer window, shared a changing room with the midfielder during his time with Dutch outfit FC Twente and the two have re-struck a friendship in Da Cruz’s first week at the club.

The pair were both youth and reserve prospects during Steve McClaren’s short second spell with the club; Da Cruz having arrived via the youth ranks at Ajax and Almere City before moves away – the forward to Italian side Novara via a loan at Dordecht and the midfielder to Dutch outfit Heracules.

And Da Cruz, who admitted it was always a dream to play in England and that he had been the subject of interest from English clubs in the past, said that 26-year-old Pelupessy has been a great help to him.

“I knew him from Holland,” he said. “We played for the same club at FC Twente.

“He's a nice guy and I'm really happy that he's here. He helps me out with a lot.

“When he found out that I had signed here he came straight to the hotel and we had a good chat.

“He's a good guy, he picks me up every day. I'm really glad that he's here.”

Pelupessy has recently found himself back in the first team – starting the Owls’ last three games.
