A woman jumped to safety from a bedroom window to escape a blaze in Rotherham which left another woman dead.

She jumped from a first floor bedroom after flames ripped through a property in Rotherwood Crescent, Thurcroft, last night.

Another woman in the house when the fire broke out died at the scene.

Firefighters found her slumped in an upstairs bedroom, but she could not be revived.

Fire investigators and police officers have arrived at the semi-detached property this morning to carry out an investigation into the cause of the fire, which started on the first floor.

A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to tackle the fire, with the first floor of the property well alight.

"The body of a woman was found inside the property. A second woman, who was already out of the property when firefighters arrived, was taken to hospital by ambulance."
